Academics
Millsaps is a small college, so students “get a lot of personal attention.†It is a “school where everybody knows your name,†as well as “a place where every student has to work hard to stay above water; excellence is the norm, not the exception.†What makes Millsaps unique is how it “breaks the mold by providing superb education as well as fun, combining the two in ways so subtle that a student may not even realize they’re learning!†The school “offers great courses taught by charismatic professors†who “bring the material to life...through their innovative teaching methods.†“Classes are not easy, but the quality of learning is top notch.†“Professors always encourage students to discuss class material and voice their opinions and questions about it. They encourage you to form your own ideas.†These “friendly and approachable†professors “continue to teach outside of the classroom.†“They welcome oneon-one time…to further develop understanding.†Students have praise for the education they are receiving saying, “coming out of Millsaps I will be fully prepared for grad school. My professors not only lecture, but they turn the material into hands-on learning opportunities,†and “I seriously respect my school’s standard of excellence in hiring people who are wonderful at their jobs.†Besides “great professors,†the school offers “a prestigious business school,†“abundant study abroad programs,†and “strong Southern hospitality and heritage.†The school’s small size provides opportunities to receive “a top-notch education, while also getting to play sports and be in clubs.†Although Millsaps may not be affordable for everyone, it “strives to be generous with scholarships.†One student was pleased to report, “They offered the most financial assistance by far.†Although student surveys were mostly positive, like this one: “Millsaps College provides the ideal learning atmosphere for liberal arts studies where they teach us how to think and not what to think,†there were complaints about “the Internet and networking capabilities,†and “the cafeteria is an area where great improvement is needed.â€
Student Body
Is there a typical Millsaps student? Some students think so: “The typical student at Millsaps was an over-involved, cool nerd in high school. We throw ourselves into sports, clubs, Greek life, and community service like it’s our job. It’s how we thrive.†“Students fit in by being involved in Greek life and other organizations.†“A typical student is involved in many activities from sports to community service clubs. Student interests are diverse, and the student body in general is very friendly and interactive.†Another student disagrees, “There is no ‘typical student’ really—the most common thread is a desire to change the world (usually, with a stop at graduate school).â€
Campus Life
“Students at Millsaps think about their classwork first and foremost. After that, we think about hanging out with friends and having fun.†The campus is “so beautiful and filled with cozy spots that many students spend a lot of their time outside.†“While most schools have ‘the quad’ where students hang out between classes, Millsaps has ‘The Bowl.’ It is a beautiful area of grass and trees in the center of campus.†But one student notes that there is still room for improvement. “The campus is beautiful, but the insides of the buildings need a serious upgrade. Every time I walk into a building, I feel like I’ve been transported back to the seventies.†Although “most of the upperclassmen dorms are amazing,†the “freshman dorms are a little sketchy.†On campus “there are concerts and fun days all throughout the semester.†“There are parties at the fraternity houses, and…some really cool things to do from concerts to oxygen bars to laser tag.†“I would definitely call it a ‘party school,’ despite the tough academics.†“There is a lot of partying on the weekends but almost everyone still manages to get studying finished.†Students also point out, “We don’t have to drink to have fun at Millsaps, though. You can always find a friend to hang out with, go to the movies, shop, or find a new great place to eat. The Millsaps curriculum even makes study groups fun (for the most part), believe it or not.†Off campus, students venture into Jackson where “there are great restaurants.â€
