Academics
Dominican University provides undergraduates with a “strong sense of community†in a “very welcoming and helpful†environment. The school’s hallmark small classes offer “more personalized learning†and help students “not only grow academically, but also personally.†To go along with that, professors at Dominican “genuinely try to get to know each student.†As one undergrad explains, “You do not feel like a number in a classroom.†Professors here are heralded as “amazing,†“caring,†and “splendid†educators who tend to be “engaging, passionate, and supportive.†Coupled with that, they work hard to ensure “classes are meaningful and make you want to learn more.†In other words, the faculty makes it known they “want their students to succeed.†As one student sums up, “My overall academic experience has been wonderful; I've enjoyed my course work and I feel prepared to go out into the working world.â€
Student Body
Although it is a Catholic institution, many students assure us that the school is “inclusive,†“open, and respectful to other religions and cultures.†They proudly proclaim that their peers are “very diverse,†noting that you’ll find “a broad range of ethnicities and races†as well as people with many different “social backgrounds and sexual [identities].†This is a community in which you “never have to travel very far in order to see a friendly face.†Plus, they are always “willing to lend a hand†to their peers. As one student explains, “Everyone at Dominican is super nice and … they say hello to you in the hallway [or] open doors for you.†One student reassures that those at Dominican “are especially interested in … the mission to create a more just and humane world.†But perhaps most importantly, “the majority are hard workers and want to excel in their studies.†The final word goes to one happy student who concludes, “Once you step foot on campus, you feel our motto of ‘Love and Truth’ come alive with each smiling face.â€
Campus Life
Because Dominican is “largely a commuter school,†there’s a sense that “students mainly … come for classes†and then leave campus. Some disagree, noting that you can always find “events and activities during the day.†In fact, Dominican undergrads have the opportunity to participate in “one of our seventy-seven different clubs and organizations,†and events range from “scavenger hunts [and] game nights†to “Bagel Day and bingo.†Additionally, “the performing arts center … puts on a really good show, and tickets are very affordable.†And on those rare nights when nothing’s going on, or for those who prefer to look for off-campus entertainment, Dominican is within close proximity of Chicago, which is so “easily accessible†that there’s even a free shuttle service that “runs 24/7 so it can pick you up and take you back to school.â€
